This Boontjie kos/ Bredie is Probably one of the most popular Stews in South African households.
I remember when Mom’s, Aunties and Grannies used to cook this quick and easy meal for the whole family, any time of the week (Today, I make this once to twice in two weeks)
The smell travelling through the house will definitely make you hungry!

The Recipe is very easy and so quick to make.
I know there are different ways to make this stew. I got a question from one of our subscribers, asking what meat I use:
You can use lamb stew cuts, sheep stew cuts or even bacon.
– In this recipe I will be using beef stew cuts. (Personally I love Lamb or sheep stew 🙂 )
The ingredients you will need is:
- Green beans
- Yellow onions (small diced)
- Potatoes (diced)
- Meat (beef-, lamb stew or bacon)
- Salt
- Ground peppercorns
- Coriander powder
- Ground Ginger powder
- milk
- small amount butter
In a pot, brown the meat in some oil on all sides. adding the ground Ginger powder, coriander powder and salt and pepper to taste.
Then add the green beans, potatoes and onions.
Cover with water until food mix are just covered.
Close the lid and bring to a boil.
The food will be ready when the potatoes are soft. Strain access water and add one teaspoon butter. Press down with Potato Masher and leaving some bumps for texture add a small amount of milk and lightly mash the bean and potato mix.
(this recipe you can adjust, add and take away ingredients… it will always taste good.)
You can enjoy it with Chutney or lemon juice, some Salt and freshly ground pepper.
Serve it with any rice!
